Link exchanges work on the principle of multiplication. After signing up with one, you usually get a free 'linkpage' where a link to your site gets displayed alongside a number of others. Your job is to promote this link page from your site, and then get other webmasters to sign up for a similar page. Your link then gets placed on the new webmasters link page, and every time that webmaster signs up someone else, your link is on that page too. This can go on for several levels (depending on the particular program) and once the ball gets rolling, your link could potentially be on thousands of peoples websites.
One great advantage of this system is that once your link is up, it stays up for however long the partipating webmaster stay in the program. A further advantage is that search engines often rank websites according to the number of links leading back to them; once your website is on thousands of linkpages, your search engine ranking goes up! |
